Primi passi
🌐 EN / 🌐 IT, in alto, cambia la lingua.
Annullare
Scrivili come sei abituato
| Scrivi | Sul foglio |
| Cmaj7 · CM7 · C^7 | CΔ |
| Cm7 · C-7 · Cmi7 | Cm7 |
| Cm7b5 · Ch7 · Cø | CØ |
| Cdim · Co | C° |
| Cdim7 · Co7 · C°7 | C°7 |
| Caug · C+ | C+ |
| C7sus4 · C7sus | C7sus4 |
| C6/9 · C69 | C6/9 |
| C7b9 · C7(b9) | C7♭9 |
| C7#11 | C7♯11 |
| C7alt | C7alt |
| Cm(maj7) · CmMaj7 | CmΔ |
| F#m7b5 | F♯Ø |
| C/E · Gm7/C | C/E Gm7/C |
| % · N.C. | % N.C. |
(♯ ♭ e i doppi), Qual.
Accordi usati e radici rapide
Righe
- + Riga aggiunge una riga in fondo all'ultima sezione.
D
Copiare e ripetere
🗑 Svuota archivio cancella tutto: prima esporta.
I
Condividere, stampare, esportare
- 🎼 MusicXML: in sviluppo.

First steps
Sketchord runs in your browser and can be installed like an app (see Phone and tablet). There's no account: your songs stay on your device. 🌐 IT / 🌐 EN, in the top bar, switches the language.
Song details
In the left column you'll find Title, Artist, Key, Tempo and Notes: whatever you type shows up right away in the sheet header. The key also drives the Roman numeral analysis and the key signature; the tempo (for example ♩=132) is what the metronome plays.
The fastest way: type and press Enter
- Tap or click a bar: the panel opens at the bottom. The 🎵 Chords tab has the chord field.
- Type the chord, for example
Dm7, and press Enter: the chord goes in and you move to the next bar.
- In the new bar the field offers the last chord, already selected: type to replace it, or press Enter to repeat it.
If the bar already has a chord, the field shows that one: Enter leaves it as it is and moves on. That way you can run through a finished song and fix only what needs fixing.
| In the chord field | What it does |
| Enter | Insert and move to the next bar |
| Shift+Enter | Go back to the previous bar (inserting the chord, if you typed one) |
| Enter, field empty | Move to the next bar without inserting |
| Esc | Close the panel |
On a phone, the keyboard's return key (↵ or Next) does the same as Enter.
Two or more chords in one bar
At the top of the panel there's the beat grid (1, 2, 3, 4 and the off-beats). Tap the beat where the chord falls, type it and press Insert to stay in the bar, or Enter to insert it and move on to the next bar. Every bar you open starts from beat 1.
A song from start to finish
- To start from an empty sheet use ✕ Clear, then type the title, key and tempo in the left column.
- Create the sections with the ready-made names in the column (Intro, Verse, Chorus…) or with + Section.
- Open the first bar and type the chords one after another, with Enter in between.
- For the parts that come back, copy instead of retyping (D).
- Add repeats, endings and jumps from the ⚙ Options tab (C).
- Save to the library with Ctrl+S: from then on it updates itself (H).
- Print it, or send the link to whoever has to play it (I).
Undo
Ctrl+Z undoes, Ctrl+Y (or Ctrl+Shift+Z) redoes; the top bar also has ↩ Undo and ↪ Redo. On a Mac use ⌘ instead of Ctrl.
B
Chords
You can type chords or build them with buttons. Either way, Sketchord writes them on the sheet in jazz notation: sevenths and extensions as superscripts, Δ for major seventh, Ø for half-diminished.
Type them the way you're used to
The most common spellings are recognized and made consistent. Flats and sharps can be typed as b and # or as the ♭ ♯ symbols.
| You type | On the sheet |
| Cmaj7 · CM7 · C^7 | CΔ |
| Cm7 · C-7 · Cmi7 | Cm7 |
| Cm7b5 · Ch7 · Cø | CØ |
| Cdim · Co | C° |

| Caug · C+ | C+ |
| C7sus4 · C7sus | C7sus4 |
| C6/9 · C69 | C6/9 |

| F#m7b5 | F♯Ø |
| C/E · Gm7/C | C/E Gm7/C |
| % · N.C. | % N.C. |
% is the repeat sign: play the bar like the one before.
The chord builder
If you prefer buttons, the panel groups them in rows: Root, Alt. (♯ ♭ and doubles), Qual. (major, minor, Δ, m⁷, 7, mΔ, °, °7, Ø, +, +7, sus2, sus4, 5), Ext. (6, 9, 11, 13, ♭9, ♯9, ♯11, ♭13, ♭5, ♯5, add9, add11, 6/9) and Bass for slash chords. The preview shows the result, Insert puts it on the chosen beat.
Used chords and quick roots
On the right of the panel, Used chords collects the chords already in the song: tap one to insert it again. Quick roots, in the left column (in the panel when the column is closed and on phones), insert the most common chords in one tap. The % button adds the repeat sign; → auto, when on, moves to the next bar by itself every time you insert a chord with a button, Insert included.
Fix and delete
Click a chord on the sheet to open its bar on the right beat: type the new one to replace it. To delete it, use the ✕ next to the chord in the panel's beat grid, or right-click the chord on the sheet.
C
Sections, rows, repeats
A song is made of sections (Intro, A, Chorus…), each section of rows, each row of bars.
Sections
- + Section, in the top bar, adds a section at the end; the left column has ready-made names: Intro, Verse, Pre-Chorus, Chorus, Bridge, Solo, Outro, Coda.
- Double-click a section's name to rename it.
- Next to the name: ↑ ↓ move it, ⎘ copy and ⎙ paste duplicate it (the copy goes below), +↓ inserts a new section below, ✕ deletes it.
- The two controls − 100% + and − 0px + scale just that section and change the space below it.
Rows
- + Row adds a row at the end of the last section. New rows show chords only: the rhythm appears when you add it.
- Hover over a row to see its controls: ↑ ↓ to move it, ⎘ copy and ⎙ paste↓ (paste below), ♩ rhythm to show or hide the rhythm, ☐ sel to select it: with several rows selected, ♩ rhythm applies to all of them. On the right, ✕ deletes it and + inserts one below.
- The number of bars and the time signature of new rows are set in the left column, under New row. For a row you've already written: ⚙ Options tab → Row settings, which also has a row with no meter, ⇥ Align right for shorter rows and ✎ Custom… to write a meter like 5/4 or 7/8: it shows on the sheet, but the beat grid stays the 4/4 one.
Repeats, endings, jumps
They're all in the ⚙ Options tab of the open bar:
- Repeat barlines: ‖: start and :‖ end, with the number of times (× 2, × 3… up to × 8).
- Volta bracket: 1., 2., 3.… Neighbouring bars with the same number share one bracket.
- Jump / Sign: D.C., D.C. al Fine, D.C. al Coda, D.S., D.S. al Fine, D.S. al Coda, 𝄋 Segno, 𝄌 Coda, Fine.
- Bar start and bar end annotation: free text, like “with pedal” or “rit.”.
- Bar time sig.: a different meter shown on a single bar, for example 2/4. It's a visual marking only.
- Pickup bar: only on the first bar of a row. The bar gets narrow, isn't counted in the bar numbers and shows the rhythm from the first beat used.
Easier reading
№ Bars shows bar numbers. In the top bar, 🔍 zooms the sheet, 𝄞 sets the chord size and ♩ the note size; your choices are remembered. 📍 keeps the top bar in place while you scroll.
D
Copy and repeat
Progressions come back: copying is faster than rewriting.
With the keyboard
- Ctrl+C copies the open bar, or the selected ones.
- Ctrl+V pastes right after; press it again to keep adding copies.
- Ctrl+D duplicates the open bar.
On a computer, opening a bar puts the cursor straight into the chord field. Until you type in it, Ctrl+C copies the bar and Ctrl+V pastes the bars you copied in Sketchord; as soon as you type or click inside, or if you've copied some text in the meantime, they work on text again.
The bar menu
Hover over a bar (on a phone: press and hold) to see its controls: ← → to move it, ⎘ ch. copies the chords, ⎘ ry. the rhythm, ⎘ b. both, ⎙ pst. pastes what you copied into the bar. That's how you give the same rhythm to bars with different chords, for example.
Several bars at once
Shift+click selects every bar from the open one (or the last selected) to the one you click, Ctrl+click adds or removes one bar; on a phone, turn on ☑ Select and tap the bars. A bar appears with ← → to move the group, ⎘ Copy, ⎙ Paste (after the last selected bar), ⊕ Duplicate and ✕ Delete. Esc leaves the selection.
Whole rows and sections
For a block that comes back, like a repeated A, use ⎘ copy and ⎙ paste on the row or next to the section name.
E
Rhythm, melody, harmony
Rhythm is optional: a chord grid on its own is already a lead sheet. When you need more, the ♩ Rhythm tab adds note values, melody and voices.
Writing rhythm
- Pick the note value: from whole note to sixteenth, dotted ones included, and rests.
- Pick the subdivision: ÷2 eighths, 3 triplets, 4 sixteenths, or 5 6 7 for quintuplets, sextuplets and septuplets.
- Tap the spot in the grid where the note falls.
Below the grid, for each note you've entered: Tie (also into the next bar), Beam to join or break beams, Bow for bowing or picking: П down, V up. On the right, Rhythm visible / Rhythm hidden shows or hides the bar's rhythm, and Notes inserted lists the notes, each with its own remove button. On the sheet, right-click a note to delete it.
Staff and melody
𝄞 Staff puts a staff on the bar and the notes get a pitch. Raise and lower them with ▲ ▼ under each note, or with the ↑ ↓ arrows on the last note you touched; add Shift to jump an octave. The accidental button cycles through ♯, ♭, ♮ and none.
- ♯♭ Key sig. shows the key signature taken from the Key field, for the whole song.
- │ Short barline stops the barline at the height of the staff.
Harmony
With the staff on, + Harmony adds a voice under the melody, up to three: every melody note gets a note a third below, which you move with ▲ ▼ in the Harm. 1, 2, 3 rows. There, × removes a note and + puts it back. Harmony rows stay hidden until you add them.
F
Transpose and analyze
In the top bar, −½ −1 +1 +½ move the whole song by a semitone or a whole tone, down or up; the current key sits in the middle. Chords, key, key signature and staff notes move together, spelled with ♯ or ♭ to suit the new key.
𝄢 Analysis writes the Roman numeral degrees above the chords, based on the song's key: for example ii⁷ V⁷ IΔ.
G
Metronome and Reader
Metronome
🥁 Metro starts at the tempo written in the Tempo field, accenting the first beat of the bar, with a dot that flashes on every click. In the bar that appears, − and + change it by 5 at a time and ■ stops it.
Reader
📖 Reader shows the song full screen, without editing controls, for playing.
- Space or ▶ Autoscroll starts and stops scrolling; the slider sets the speed.
- + and −, or a two-finger pinch, zoom in and out.
- On a phone, a horizontal swipe jumps to the next or previous section.
- Esc or ✕ Exit to go back to writing.

Autosave
Every change is saved in the browser as you work. When you reopen Sketchord, if you were working on a song it offers to pick it up again: Resume or No thanks. If you visit the guide or the story and come back to the app, the song is simply there.
The library
- 💾 or Ctrl+S puts the song in the library. The button turns into ✓: the song is linked, and from then on every change also updates the copy in the library. If the library already holds a different song with the same title and artist, Sketchord asks before replacing it.
- Ctrl+Shift+S (⧉ Save as…) makes a separate copy, for example for a version in another key.
- 📚 Library or Ctrl+L lists your songs: search by title, artist or key, sort by date or A to Z, open with a tap, ⎘ duplicate, delete.
- The 🎸 Antonio's songs tab collects songs published by Sketchord's author: Open to play one, ⊕ to copy it into your library, ⊕ all to copy them all.
A backup copy
The library lives in this device's browser: if you clear the site's data, it goes with it. Every now and then use ⬇ Export all, at the bottom of the library, to save it to a file. ⬆ Import file adds the songs from that file, on another computer or phone too; songs from the same library that are already there stay as they are. 🗑 Clear library deletes everything: export first.

Share, print, export
Send a song as a link
💾 Export → 🔗 Link creates an address that holds the whole song, tempo included. Whoever opens it finds the song ready to play, metronome included, and can save it to their own library with 💾. Where the device supports it the share menu opens; otherwise the link is copied. The song travels inside the link, compressed: usually a few hundred characters, and it doesn't go through any server. It's the easiest way to send a tune to your students. If a link arrives cut off, Sketchord says so instead of opening another song.
Print and PDF
🖨 Print lays the sheet out for A4 (pick the paper in the print dialog) and won't split a section across two pages if it fits on one. 📕 PDF, in the Export menu, creates the file directly.
Other formats
- 💾 JSON: the project file, to reopen and edit, on another device too.
- 📄 Text: the chord grid as a text file.
- 🖼 SVG: the sheet as a vector image, to open in a browser (graphics programs such as Inkscape can't read it).
- 🎸 ChordPro: for OnSong, Songbook and similar apps.
- 📱 iReal Pro: opens the song in iReal Pro and also saves a file you can open with iReal Pro.
- 🎼 MusicXML: in development. For now it only carries the chord roots, with no rhythm or melody: don't use it for a real score yet.
Open and import
📂 Open loads a Sketchord project (JSON), a ChordPro file, a PDF with selectable text, an iReal Pro HTML export or a text grid like this one:
[Verse]
C | Am | F | G
With 📂 Any format the format is detected for you. 🔭 From image reads a photo or screenshot of a chord chart with Claude's AI: it needs your own Anthropic API key, which stays saved in this browser only, and the image is sent to Anthropic for analysis.
